How Acupuncture Supports Your Body During IVF: A Timeline

How Acupuncture Supports Your Body During IVF: A Timeline

When should you start acupuncture during IVF?

One of the most common questions I get from patients starting IVF is simple: when should I begin acupuncture? The answer depends on your timeline, but the short version is that the earlier you start, the more your body benefits. As a preferred acupuncture provider with CCRM Boston Fertility, I work alongside reproductive endocrinologists to support patients through every phase of the IVF process.

Your Acupuncturist: Jose Ruiz, L.Ac.

At Family Acupuncture & Herbs of Reading, your care is led by Jose Ruiz, L.Ac. Patients often tell us they appreciate how Jose explains what he is doing and why, without rushing the conversation.

How Your Sessions Are Personalized

Each visit begins with a brief conversation so I can understand what your week has been like and what your body is asking for today.

We might focus on:

  • Sleep quality or stress management
  • Appetite and digestion support
  • Emotional well-being and nervous system regulation

Acupuncture Support for Patients through every Stage
of the IVF Process

Here is what support looks like, stage by stage:

Three Months Before Your Cycle: Building the Foundation

  • If you have the time, starting acupuncture about three months before your IVF cycle gives us the best window to work with. That is roughly one full egg maturation cycle. During this phase, acupuncture focuses on improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, supporting egg quality, regulating your cycle, and reducing the stress that often comes with fertility treatment.
  • I also use Chinese herbal medicine during this phase for many patients. Specific formulas can support hormone balance and overall reproductive health. These are tailored to your individual pattern and coordinated with your fertility clinic, ensuring no conflicts with your protocol.

During Stimulation: Supporting Your Response

  • Once you begin injectable medications, your body is working hard. Ovaries are producing multiple follicles, hormone levels are shifting rapidly, and many patients feel physically and emotionally drained. Acupuncture during this phase helps manage side effects like bloating, headaches, and mood swings. It also supports blood flow to the reproductive organs, which can help your body respond to the medications more effectively.
  • I typically see patients once or twice a week during stimulation, depending on their response and how they are feeling. Sessions are gentle and focused on keeping your body balanced under significant demand.

The Two-Week Wait and Early Pregnancy

  • The two-week wait between transfer and your pregnancy test is one of the hardest parts of IVF. Acupuncture during this period focuses on supporting implantation, maintaining blood flow to the uterus, and managing the anxiety and insomnia that come with waiting. I usually see patients once or twice during this window.
  • If the cycle is successful, many patients continue with acupuncture through the first trimester to support early pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage. This is especially common for patients with a history of pregnancy loss.

IVF Acupuncture Support in Wakefield and Greater Boston

  • Not everyone has three months to prepare. If your cycle is coming up soon, there is still value in starting acupuncture now. Even a few weeks of treatment before retrieval can help regulate your stress response and improve blood flow.
  • If you are going through IVF in the Wakefield, Reading, or Greater Boston area and want to add acupuncture to your protocol, reach out. I coordinate directly with CCRM Boston and other fertility clinics in the area to make sure your care is aligned at every step.

Chinese Herbs for IVF Cycle

Herbs are most beneficial during the preparation phase, before you start IVF medications.

Once stimulation begins, I typically pause herbal formulas to avoid any interaction with your protocol. Everything is coordinated with your clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How often should I get acupuncture during an IVF cycle? During the preparation phase, once or twice a week is standard. During stimulation, I may increase to twice a week, depending on how your body responds. After transfer, one to two sessions during the two-week wait are typical.
  • Will my fertility doctor be okay with me doing acupuncture? Most reproductive endocrinologists support acupuncture as part of an IVF protocol. As a preferred provider with CCRM Boston Fertility, I work closely with their team and other clinics in the area. Your fertility doctor is welcome to reach out to me directly if they have questions about the treatment plan.
