Anxiety does not always look like a panic attack. Sometimes it is a tight chest that will not let go, a mind that replays the same worry at 2 a.m., or a feeling of being on edge from the moment you wake up. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and there are options beyond medication.
At Family Acupuncture & Herbs in Wakefield, MA, I work with patients from Reading, Lynnfield, Stoneham, and across the North Shore who come in feeling wound up and leave feeling as if something shifted. Acupuncture does not erase stress from your life, but it gives your nervous system a chance to reset.

How Your Sessions Are Personalized
Each visit begins with a brief conversation so I can understand what your week has been like and what your body is asking for today.
We might focus on:
Why Anxiety Gets Stuck in Your Body

Your body has two modes: fight-or-flight and rest-and-recover. When you are stressed for long stretches, whether from work, fertility treatments, family demands, or health worries, your nervous system can get locked in that fight-or-flight state. You feel it as tension in your shoulders, shallow breathing, poor sleep, digestive issues, or an inability to quiet your thoughts and sometimes as panic attacks.
Acupuncture works directly on this system. The needles stimulate specific points that signal to your body that it is safe to shift out of high alert. Heart rate slows. Breathing deepens. Muscles release. Most patients feel calmer and more relaxed after each session.
What a Session Looks Like for Anxiety
The first visit starts with a conversation. I want to understand what your anxiety feels like, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your sleep, digestion, and energy. In Chinese medicine, anxiety is not one thing. It can present several different ways, and the treatment is different for each one.
After we talk, you lie down in a quiet room. The needles are thin, and most people barely feel them go in. Once they are placed, you rest for about 25 to 30 minutes. Many patients fall asleep during this time, which for some is the first real rest they have had in weeks.

What Patients Typically Notice
Everyone responds differently, but the most common things I hear after the first few sessions are:
These changes tend to build over time. I usually recommend starting with bi-weekly sessions for the first four to six weeks, then adjusting based on how your body responds.

Acupuncture Does Not Replace Therapy or Medication
I want to be clear about this. Acupuncture works well alongside talk therapy, medication, and other support. Many of my patients are working with therapists or psychiatrists at the same time. The goal is not to choose one over the other.
The goal is to give your body every advantage in managing anxiety, so you feel more like yourself.
